A Southwest Adventure: From the Grand Canyon to Zion
The American Southwest has a way of making you feel small in the very best way. Towering cliffs, glowing red rocks, winding rivers, and endless desert views create landscapes that almost don’t seem real. Our recent journey took us through some of the most iconic destinations in Arizona and Utah — and every stop brought something unforgettable.
From the vastness of the Grand Canyon to the peaceful beauty of Zion, this trip was filled with adventure, reflection, and moments of awe.
Grand Canyon West
Our adventure began at Grand Canyon West, located on the Hualapai Reservation in Arizona. While it’s not part of the main national park area, it offers an incredible introduction to the vast scale of the Grand Canyon.
Standing at the rim and looking out over the canyon, the layers of rock and the distant Colorado River created a view that seemed to stretch forever. One of the most famous attractions here is the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends out over the canyon, allowing visitors to stand directly above the dramatic drop below.
One of the most memorable moments of our visit to Grand Canyon West was hiking up to the top of Guano Point. The rocky path winds upward along the ridge, and while it’s not a long hike, the climb is steep enough to get your heart pumping. Reaching the top felt like a real accomplishment and offered one of the most incredible panoramic views of the entire canyon. From the summit, we could see the Colorado River far below and layers upon layers of canyon walls stretching to the horizon. It was the perfect first “challenge” of the trip and a reminder that sometimes the best views come after a little effort.
It was the perfect way to begin our journey through the Southwest — a reminder of just how immense and beautiful this landscape truly is.
Sedona
From the canyon, we headed south to the stunning red rock landscape of Sedona.
Sedona is known for its dramatic red rock formations, scenic drives, and incredible hiking trails. One of our favorite moments was hiking Fay Canyon, where we scrambled up to the natural arch. The climb was a bit adventurous, but standing beneath the arch and looking out over the canyon made every step worth it.
Another meaningful stop was the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a small church built directly into the red rock cliffs. Standing there at the foot of the cross, surrounded by towering stone and desert beauty, was a powerful reminder of God’s incredible creation.
One of the things that made our time in Sedona especially memorable was the chance to enjoy some truly unique dining experiences surrounded by incredible scenery.
One morning, we headed up to the Mesa Grill, located right next to the Sedona airport. As we enjoyed breakfast, we watched small planes take off and land just outside the windows — such a fun and unexpected experience. After breakfast, we stepped outside and walked over to the nearby Sedona Airport Scenic Overlook, where we were greeted with sweeping views of Sedona’s famous red rock landscape stretching out in every direction.
Later that week, we had dinner at The Hudson, and it was the perfect way to end the day. As the sun began to set, the red rocks glowed in warm shades of orange and gold, creating one of the most beautiful dinner views we’ve ever experienced. Great food paired with an unforgettable sunset made it a meal we won’t soon forget.
Another highlight of our time in Sedona was taking a thrilling off-road adventure with Pink Jeep Tours on their famous Broken Arrow Trail and Scenic Rim Tour. Riding in the iconic pink Jeep, we climbed over rugged red rock terrain that you would never reach in a regular vehicle. The guide shared fascinating information about Sedona’s geology and history while navigating steep slickrock climbs and dramatic drop-offs, making the ride both exciting and unforgettable. Along the way, we stopped at several incredible viewpoints where the sweeping red rock landscape stretched out in every direction. It was such a fun way to explore Sedona’s backcountry, and I highly recommend it!
Page, Arizona
Next, we traveled north to Page, home to some of the most photographed landscapes in the Southwest.
Our first stop was Lower Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon carved by centuries of water and wind. Walking through the narrow sandstone corridors felt almost surreal. The sunlight reflecting off the curved walls created glowing shades of orange, gold, and deep red.
Just a short drive away is Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado River makes a dramatic horseshoe-shaped turn through the canyon. Standing at the overlook, watching the river wind its way through the cliffs, was one of the most breathtaking views of the entire trip.
Bryce Canyon National Park
From Page, we crossed into Utah to explore Bryce Canyon National Park.
Bryce Canyon is famous for its hoodoos — tall, thin rock spires that fill the canyon amphitheater. The sheer number of these formations creates a landscape unlike anything else we had seen on the trip.
Looking out over the amphitheater felt like stepping into another world. The combination of red, orange, and white rock formations creates an incredible contrast against the blue sky.
It’s truly one of the most unique national parks in the United States.
Zion National Park
Our final stop was Zion National Park, and it was the perfect ending to the journey.
Zion is known for its towering sandstone cliffs, narrow canyons, and incredible hiking trails. The scale of the canyon walls is truly awe-inspiring.
One of the highlights of our time here was hiking to Scout Lookout. The climb up the famous Walter’s Wiggles switchbacks was challenging, but reaching the lookout and seeing the sweeping canyon views made the effort completely worth it.
Standing there, looking out over Zion, felt like the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable adventure.
Reflections on the Journey
Traveling through the Southwest is a reminder of how diverse and beautiful our country truly is. Each destination offered something completely different — from vast canyon vistas to glowing slot canyons to towering red cliffs.
But more than anything, this trip was a reminder of the joy that comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, exploring new places, and experiencing the beauty of God’s creation.
And like every great adventure, this one left us already dreaming about where the next journey will take us. 🧡🥾
